Jennifer Freedman

In 2004, Jennifer began her percussive studies and learned to read rhythm with a percussion instructor who at the time had a 17 piece mambo big band. In six months’ time, curious and ambitious, Jennifer took on the offer to watch the instructor’s big band rehearsals. In the absence of the band’s percussionist one day, Jennifer was given the opportunity to sit in with this big band, where she developed site reading of their original compositions and spent the next two years as their steady percussionist. She played alongside professional musicians such as Jennifer Vincent, Cecilia Tenconi, Frederic Las Vargas, John Walsh, Guido Gonzalez, Luisa Parrot and many more. Two months later, the band began to look for a male background vocalist/corista to accompany the existing female background vocalist. By now, Jennifer was familiar enough with the tunes percussively that she offered to take on the additional role of a corista exercising her vocal range of 2nd and 3rd voices. These experiences helped to develop and identify Jennifer as a diverse musician, with a wide vocal range, and set the foundation for her ability to play, sing, and later become a lyricist for various artist albums.

In 2015, Jennifer visited el Museo Del Barrio in Harlem looking to explore musical and artistic landscapes through the Conservatory for the Performing Arts program. Jennifer was sought out by one of the lead vocalist, Jose Luis Quiles, former member of Hector Lavoe Orq. who recognized her talent as a background vocalist and introduced her to the Director Louie Bauzo, He together with Louie Bauzo, Omar Castanos, and David Oquendo played key roles in identifying and encouraging her development as a lead vocalist.
